Intensive Support Playgroup

The ISP program is designed to provide a high quality playgroup experience for Aboriginal children that supports development of their school readiness and assists families to access other community services.

ISP also gives young people a good grounding for school preparedness with staff facilitating the transition to school. The ISP Staff are in continuous collaboration with many service providers in each community such as local schools, child health nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, police officers, council members and librarians.

Who is it for?

ISP is for Aboriginal children from birth to five years old and their families.

Where is it run?

The ISP operates in Newman in the Shire of East Pilbara, using culturally appropriate playgroup resources and operating from time to time in a range of local settings in order to share cultural experiences. Families from outlying communities sometimes drop in to visit when they are in town. The ISP is held in the YMCA’s Early Learning Centre which is centrally located and adjacent to the Newman Shopping Centre.

Funded initially by BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the WA Department of Communities, YMCA WA and partners World Vision Australia (WVA) collaborated to operate playgroup in the communities of Nullagine, Jigalong and Punnmu. YMCA WA and WVA have made a commitment to continue this valuable partnership to provide high quality playgroup experiences and employment opportunities for Indigenous women within the Newman township.
