Young people lead YMCAs Australia-wide to environmental stance

YMCA WA is proud to announce they will reduce their carbon emissions from A4 paper production to zero, over the course of the next 12 months.

The move comes as part of an Australia-wide initiative across all YMCAs, led by a group of inspired young people.

With a strong focus on the power of inspired young people, it comes as no surprise YMCA WA CEO Ross Kyrwood has praised those behind the plan.

‘This scheme and the fantastic people leading it exemplify what the Y stands for, and is a prime example of how we aim to bring out the best in what young people have to offer,’ Ross said.

YMCA Global Change Agent Lachlan Headlam, the brain trust behind the environmental stance, says the movement is ‘just the beginning’.

“I believe there are many more inspired young people filled with passion, creativity and ideas and that this is the first of many exciting changes.”

The 26-year-old added: “We have the power to make a difference and together anything is possible.”

32.85 tonnes of A4 paper are currently purchased each year by the YMCA in Australia, which is the equivalent of 788 trees and 263 tonnes of carbon emissions.

YMCA Australia Interim Chief Executive Melinda Crole has also backed the move, and is committed to supporting the positive impact of young people on the community.

“We’re very excited about this initiative and positive about the future of both the YMCA and the world when young people are engaged and inspired,” Ms Crole said.

Serving in over 700 communities across the country with more than 30 million participations recorded annually, YMCA believes the initiative is another step in the right direction towards achieving healthy, happy communities.
