YMCA WA’s Kindergarten Oral Language Program (KOLP) has won the 2016 YMCA Australia Program of Excellence Award at the YMCA National Convention.
The prestigious award highlights excellence in delivering a service that has a mission and community focus and helps YMCA achieve its goals, and as it’s already been successfully implemented in 13 schools, the program has certainly done just that.
YMCA WA CEO Ross Kyrwood was thrilled to see KOLP receive a well-deserved acknowledgement by the YMCA. “It’s wonderful that the team has been rewarded for the fantastic program they’ve implemented, and being acknowledged for the amazing impact they are having on children who access the program.” Ross said
“Not only does it focus on achieving conventional literacy outcomes, social development and well-being, the program also benefits the skills of Early Childhood teachers, by enabling them to build capacity within schools.”
KOLP is delivered in partnership with WACHS Central Great Sothern’s Community Health and is funded by SIHI through the Royalties for Regions.
The program aims to improve the language skills of young children, provide an equitable and accessible language-based program, focuses on developing the skills of early childhood teachers and supports children whose families are not accessing mainstream services.
Ross added: “We are extremely proud of the KOLP’s achievements so far and look forward to continuing to develop the program in 2017 and beyond.”
