The Y Goldfields much-loved NAIDOC Week Youth Basketball Competition returned to Maku Stadium on Wednesday 9 July, bringing energy, community spirit, and a whole lot of fun.
Organised by the Y Goldfields youth team in collaboration with the National Indigenous Australians Agency, Goldfields NAIDOC Committee, Centre Care, BEGA Youth Services and Hope Community, the event brought together young people and families from across the region.
This year’s competition featured both male and female divisions, with teams going head-to-head in a lively and inclusive atmosphere. The Y Goldfields Youth Department crowned division winners and recognised most valuable players for their skill, effort, and sportsmanship.
Adding to the excitement, the Goldfields Giants coach and players made a surprise appearance - stepping in to umpire the finals and help pack down the stadium.
Youth Engagement Officer Heather Momo captured the spirit of the event. She said, “This is a true community NAIDOC event that is welcoming, inclusive and culturally safe for all children, young people and families.”
“We even got a surprise visit from the coach and players of our very own Goldfield Giants Basketball Team who helped out with umpiring our finals and helping clean up the stadium.
“All in all, it was a great event, and we can’t wait to do it again!”
With planning already underway for 2026, one thing is certain - NAIDOC Week in the Goldfields continues to grow stronger, bringing communities together through sport and culture.
